And so it begins……

Since I did it on a bicycle aged 17, this was a route I wanted to revisit…Near 30 years on, the challenge remains and indeed is greater as by doing this, I hope to show that it is indeed possible…and practical to get an older car (yes even a Renault!) out and use it. In my case a pre WW2 Renault. Thus proving that going to a local show would be in everyone’s “easy to do list” and maybe encouraging others into a longer trip

It has become even more possible by having a house sitter and various members willing to join me on all or part of it. With a short window, I have to tow it to the start and back from the end…maybe, but in between the aim is around 150 miles a day, ideally sticking as close as possible to the original cycle route. If I can, more some days to allow sight-seeing on others. Recent trips suggest a moving average of 25-30 mph on mixed roads. Indeed so far I have clocked up half a LEJOG this year in 4 days, just to prove it. Bear in mind it is 500 mile oil change intervals.

Like then, the aim is to do it for charity, the plan at the moment is Guide dogs for the Blind. Ideally looking at sponsorship per mile…as you never know…

The route basically is:
Land’s End – St Columb Road – Boscastle – Great Torrington – South Moulton – Crowcombe – Cheddar Gorge – Old Severn Bridge – St Briavels – Hereford – Ironbridge – Nantwich – Leigh – Brock (A6) – Dentdale – Shap – Langholm – Selkirk – Edinburgh – OFRB – Bridge of Earn – Dunkeld – Dalwhinnie – Kingussie – Aviemore – Inverness – Bonar Bridge – Helmesdale – Wick – John O’Groats
I say basically as it need adapting for a car, most likely the start will be LE to Taunton and then Cheddar.

So why LE to JOG…easy…downhill…yep that’s right, LE is on a cliff, JOG has a beach. Tail winds…yes in the uk winds mostly are SW to NE. oh and England is just so hilly so to finish off on the gentle inclines and flats of Scotland…is just so obvious.
